Roof Replacement
Roof Replacement in Louisville, KY
A new roof is the fix that lasts. 3 Peaks Roofing replaces residential roofs across Louisville, Shepherdsville, Mt. Washington and the surrounding area. We tear off the old roof down to the deck, replace any damaged decking, and install a complete new system with fresh underlayment, flashing and ventilation.

We install asphalt shingle, metal and low-slope flat roofs, and every quote is in writing with no pressure. If hail or wind damaged your roof, we'll inspect and document the damage, and can meet your adjuster on site to show what we found.

Signs It's Time to Replace, Not Repair
A roof rarely fails all at once. These are the signs that patching is costing you more than a new roof would:
Age and widespread wear: shingles curling, cracking or shedding granules across the whole roof, not just one spot, usually mean the roof is near the end of its life.
Repeat leaks or soft decking: if you're repairing the same roof year after year, or the deck feels spongy underfoot, the damage is below the shingles and a replacement is the lasting fix.
Not sure which you need? We'll inspect your roof for free and show you photos of what we find before recommending anything.
How a Roof Replacement Works With 3 Peaks
Replacing a roof is a big decision, so we keep the steps simple and put everything in writing.
1. Free inspection. We get on the roof and, where we can reach it, into the attic. We're looking at the whole system, not just the shingles you can see from the street.
2. Photos of what we find. You get pictures of the problem areas, so you see what we saw. If something only needs a repair, we'll tell you that.
3. A written estimate. Your estimate spells out the scope: how many layers come off, the underlayment and flashing going back on, ventilation, the roofing material and color, and how we'll handle any damaged decking we find once the old roof is off.
4. Help with the insurance claim, if it's storm damage. If hail or wind caused the damage, we document it and can meet your adjuster at the house. More on that on our insurance claims page.
5. Install. We schedule around the forecast and only open up as much roof as we can dry in that day.
6. Cleanup and final walkthrough. We clean up the debris and walk the job with you before we call it done.
What We Check Before We Write Your Estimate
A replacement estimate is only as good as the inspection behind it. Here's what we look at on every roof:
-
The decking. Soft or spongy spots underfoot usually mean water has gotten into the wood. We note where, so there are no surprises on install day.
-
How many layers are on the roof. Some older Louisville homes have a second layer of shingles nailed over the first. Every layer has to come off, and that changes the scope.
-
Flashing. The metal at walls, chimneys, skylights and valleys is where a lot of leaks start. We check whether it can be reused or needs replacing.
-
Pipe boots and roof penetrations. The rubber collars around plumbing vents crack with sun and age.
-
Attic ventilation. We look at how air gets in at the eaves and out at the ridge or vents. Poor airflow can shorten the life of a new roof and make upstairs rooms hotter in summer.
-
Signs of moisture in the attic. Stained sheathing, damp insulation or mildew tell us water or condensation has been a problem.
-
Storm damage. Hail bruises, cracked or creased shingles, and lifted tabs from wind. If we find it, we'll tell you whether an insurance claim is worth looking into.
-
Gutters and drip edge. A new roof should drain into gutters that work. If yours are pulling away or overflowing, we'll say so. We also do gutters.
What to Expect on Install Day
Most homeowners have never been through a roof replacement, so here's how the day usually goes.
Before we start. It helps to move cars out of the driveway and garage, take fragile things off walls that share the roofline, and cover anything stored in the attic. Tear-off shakes the house, and dust and the odd nail can come through.
Protecting your property. We set up around the house to protect landscaping, siding and walkways from falling debris.
Tear-off. The old shingles, underlayment and worn flashing come off, down to the deck. It's the loudest part of the job. Pets are usually happier somewhere quieter for the day.
Deck check. With the deck exposed, we look at the wood itself. If boards are rotted or soft, we show you before we replace them, and it's handled the way your written estimate says.
Dry-in and install. New underlayment goes down first so the house is protected, then flashing, vents and the roofing itself.
Cleanup. Debris is hauled off, and we run a magnet sweep over the yard, driveway and beds to pick up nails.
Final walkthrough. We walk the roof and the property with you, answer your questions, and make sure you're happy before we leave.
Louisville Weather and Your New Roof
Kentucky weather is hard on roofs in a few specific ways, and it shapes what we recommend.
Freeze-thaw winters. Louisville gets freezing nights from roughly November into early April, often followed by milder days. Water that gets under a lifted shingle or into a cracked flashing seam freezes, expands and opens the gap a little more each time. Solid flashing and good underlayment at the eaves and valleys matter here.
Spring hail and wind. Spring storms bring hail and strong wind across the region. Hail can bruise shingles in ways you won't see from the ground, and wind lifts and tears tabs. If your roof has been through a storm, a free inspection will tell you where you stand. See our storm damage page.
Hot, humid summers. Summer heat bakes the roof surface and the attic under it. That's one reason we pay attention to ventilation on every replacement.
Paying for a New Roof
Two things help most homeowners here. If the damage came from a storm, your homeowner's insurance may cover some or all of it, depending on your policy and deductible. We'll walk you through how the claim process works on our insurance claims page. If you're paying out of pocket, we offer financing for qualified homeowners, and we can talk through it at your estimate.

Roof Replacement FAQs
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most residential replacements are finished in a day or two once work starts. Larger or steeper roofs and metal systems can take longer, and your quote includes a timeline.

What affects the cost of a new roof?
Roof size and pitch, how many layers need tearing off, the condition of the decking, the material you choose (shingle, metal or flat), and details like chimneys, skylights and ventilation. Your written quote breaks these down.

Will insurance pay for my roof replacement?
If hail or wind damaged your roof, your homeowner's policy may cover part or all of the replacement, depending on your policy and deductible. We inspect and document the damage and can meet your adjuster on site.

Do you offer financing?
Yes. Flexible financing is available for qualified homeowners. See our Financing page.
Can you put a new roof over my old one?
We tear off to the deck. Laying new shingles over old hides whatever is going on with the decking, and building codes don't allow a new layer over a roof that already has two layers or one that's water-damaged. Tearing off lets us see and fix the wood before the new roof goes on.
Do I need to be home on install day?
Not the whole time. We like to see you at the start and at the final walkthrough. It helps if the driveway is clear.
What happens if it rains during the replacement?
We watch the forecast and schedule around it. We only tear off what we can dry in the same day, so the house isn't left open to the weather.
Can I replace just part of my roof?
Sometimes. If one section is damaged and the rest has plenty of life left, a partial replacement can make sense. Matching the color and wear of older shingles is the hard part, and we'll tell you honestly how close a match is likely to be. With storm damage, your insurer decides how much of the roof the claim covers.
Will a new roof lower my energy bills?
It can help, but we won't promise a number. Fixing poor attic ventilation and choosing a lighter color or a reflective metal roof can keep the attic cooler in summer. We'll point out what would make a difference on your house.
